How Much Does It Cost To See An Addiction Counselor?

Those suffering from an addiction and seeking help will almost inevitably arrive at the following question: how much will it cost to see an addiction counselor? After seeing famous stars and starlets entering lavish addiction counseling facilities, it is not unreasonable for those without 8-figure bank accounts to wonder if there are more affordable options. Luckily there are, but the costs can vary dramatically depending on a number of factors.

The first factor is whether or not the addiction counseling is per hour, or part of a program. Programs may work well for some, and are generally a combination of personal and group addiction counseling or strictly group counseling. This approach generally has fixed pricing, but success rates may not be as high as seeing an addiction counselor on a per hour basis. As a general rule, group sessions are less expensive than one on one sessions with addiction counselors, and a combination approach may be both fiscally responsible as well as cathartic in that one gets to practice sharing their experience with other patients in a similar situation.

Regardless of whether or not personal counseling is part of the package, there are types of addiction treatment where one takes up temporary residence at the treatment facility. Such treatment is obviously substantially more expensive as the cost of lodging is involved, but for some patients this is the absolute best way to interact with an addiction counselor. The nicer the facility, and the more amenities it offers, the higher they are likely to charge for their addiction counseling regardless if there are any tangible differences in the quality of their counselors. It is not unheard of for professional addiction counseling facilities to charge $100,000 a month or more for executive and/or celebrity addiction counseling, though few individuals could afford such a bill.

Location plays a significant factor regardless of whether one is living on-site or if they come for counseling sessions with an addiction counselor and leave afterward. The average cost for comparable addiction counseling services in areas such as New England and Los Angeles are greater than those in areas such as Little Rock and Memphis.

The final factor that influences the price of addiction counseling services is the education and relative fame and experience of the addiction counselor or counselors. The more educated, experienced and famous the addiction counselor is, the more they are likely to charge as a general rule. The premium charged by higher tier addiction counselors generally does not scale linearly with their success rate but there is still a correlation between experience, education and success rates.

In some cases it is possible for insurance policies to cover some, or even all of the treatment associated with addiction counseling. The degree to which any given insurance policy may or may not help depends on that policy. When considering different addiction counselors it is certainly worth asking whether or not they accept insurance issued by various providers. The worst they can say is no, but they may be able to refer a patient to another addiction counselor that accepts specific types of insurance.
